Halo Burger and Tim Anderson Create the UK’s first vegan Katsu Burger

On 10th March, an exclusive vegan katsu burger is coming to London for one month only. Top plant-based burger restaurant Halo Burger has collaborated with MasterChef winner and Vegan Japaneasy author, Tim Anderson to create a burger that captures the satisfying crunch and rich umami tang of a classic Katsu, all whilst being 100 per cent plant-based.  The Vegan Katsu Cheeseburger sees a juicy deep-fried 1/4lb Beyond Meat patty encased in super crispy panko breadcrumbs paired with a deep-fried smoked Gouda style cheese slice, umami mayo, Tonkatsu sauce and shredded cabbage. Paying homage to a timeless favourite, the Katsu Burger is inspired by Tim Anderson’s desire to increase accessibility to Japanese food coupled with his ‘halo moment’ when trying Halo burger at the POP Brixton branch. Inspired by his new book Vegan JapanEasy: Classic & modern vegan Japanese recipes to cook at home (Hardie Grant, £22). Tim Anderson has ‘Japanified’ the classic Halo burger, using key Japanese flavours to create an authentic twist on tradition. The burger will be available Sunday-Wednesday from Halo’s Shoreditch site and will embody classic …

Bleecker Burger to donate all profits on March 1st to mental health charity Changing Horizons

On Sunday 1st March, Bleecker Burger will be donating all profits from its four restaurants to mental health charity Changing Horizons. It will be the third year running that Bleecker has supported a charity in this way, on what would have been the birthday of founder Zan Kaufman’s late brother Mark, who died in 2017. As Zan Kaufman explains, “My brother Mark worked his entire life in hospitality. From being a room-service runner to managing restaurants, it was what he liked to do and where he fitted in. He spent a summer at Bleecker too. Mark was charming and funny and had a talent for commanding the attention of a room.” “Mark suffered from mental illness and addiction. In April 2017, he overdosed and passed away at 35 years of age. Hospitality accepted Mark when other fields wouldn’t. It allowed him to stay himself whilst still struggling with this disease. For this I am grateful. Mark’s birthday is March 1st. On this day, Bleecker will donate all of its profits to Changing Horizons to help support and build awareness around mental …

UK’s top Michelin Star chefs to join forces at pop up restaurant in hotel at the heart of UK’s culinary capital

AS a hotel in its own right, it has its fair share of claims to fame. Designed by the revered architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, and with gardens crafted by the pre-eminent horticulturalist of her time, Gertrude Jeckyll, the Abbey House, a one-time stately home, is a place with an enviable history. Now an imposing hotel, nestled among the rolling fells of Cumbria and a mere stone’s throw away from Furness Abbey, one of the North West’s most historically significant sites, it is used to its fair share of glamour. But in February, for two nights only, its star will rise exponentially as some of the UK’s most revered Michelin Starred chefs – along with the team from one of the world’s best  steakhouses – exit the M6 at Junction 36 . For Operations Director of the Abbey House Hotel and Gardens, Brian Conroy, the event is a way of shining a light on the hotel – one of Cumbria’s undiscovered gems – whilst making a positive contribution to the local community; on the evening, the …

We talk Sake with Robin Sola, founder of Sorakami

You may have seen our recent feature on Sorakami, the new Sake subscription service that offers the latest craft Sakes. We wanted to find out more on how founder Robin Sola discovered his love for Sake and what made him decide to turn it into a business and why Sake could be your next favourite tipple. Tell us about your background and how you discovered Sake? My name is Robin Sola, and I am the founder of Sorakami. I was born and raised in France. My background is a little unusual. After a slight colour-blindness condition put an end to my airline pilot career, I moved to Tokyo, Japan, to study economics at University. There, my friends took me on a tour of a small Sake brewery near Kyoto, and it is where I discovered the true face of Sake. I’ve always been into my wines, but I realised I knew nothing about Japanese Sake. It was a real eye-opening moment for me, but also the beginning of a long love story. That’s when I …
