Virgin Australia has officially returned to long-haul international flying with the launch of its inaugural Sydney–Doha service, marking a significant milestone for the airline. The new route connects Australian travellers to over 170 global destinations.

This service signals a major development in the partnership between Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways. Additional flights from Brisbane begin 19 June, Perth 26 June, and Melbourne services for December 2025. The alliance is expanding rapidly to meet growing international demand.

The joint network will offer seamless access to six continents. Passengers can enjoy enhanced travel options, elevated inflight experiences, and expanded loyalty rewards. The partnership is expected to grow flight capacity between Australia and Doha to 2.65 million seats annually by late 2025.

Qatar Airways will operate the new services using its state-of-the-art Boeing 777 aircraft, featuring Qsuite Business Class, widely regarded as the world’s best. Travellers can enjoy private suites, lie-flat beds, and even the option to create a double bed in the sky. Economy passengers will benefit from spacious seating and award-winning service, alongside complimentary high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi for the entire journey.

Economic projections indicate that the new Australia–Doha route will contribute more than $3 billion to the Australian economy over the next five years. It’s also set to generate hundreds of new jobs across aviation, hospitality, and tourism sectors. Virgin Australia employees will gain valuable opportunities for international experience through secondments to Qatar Airways.

Dave Emerson, Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Australia, described the launch as a defining moment for the airline and for Australian international travel. He emphasized the broader economic and strategic value the partnership brings to the region.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer welcomed the inaugural Sydney–Doha flight at Hamad International Airport, praising the collaboration as a result of tireless preparation and a shared vision to offer world-class service and competition in the market.

The launch also brings a host of new perks for Velocity Frequent Flyer’s 13 million members. These include a 50% bonus on Status Credits for bookings made between 12–30 June 2025 for travel between 1 October 2025 and 27 May 2026. Members will also earn increased Status Credits on all Doha-bound flights from 1 October 2025.

Additional loyalty enhancements include bonus Points by tier: 50% for Silver, 75% for Gold, and 100% for Platinum. Other benefits include Business Class upgrades using Points, airport dining vouchers, lounge access, complimentary seat selection, and extra baggage allowances for top-tier members.

Celebration Fares and Limited-Time Discounts

To celebrate the launch, Virgin Australia has introduced limited-time celebration fares to Doha and onward European destinations. Discounts of up to 15% are available for travel between 16 October 2025 and 31 March 2026. These fares are on sale until 30 June 2025, unless sold out earlier.

The Virgin Australia–Qatar Airways partnership represents a bold step forward for Australian aviation, promising travellers more routes, better value, and premium service standards.
