As Bhutan experiences a reported 41% increase in 2024, a new hospitality offering is capturing the attention of discerning travellers seeking serenity and cultural depth. Pemako Punakha, located in the remote Punakha Valley, is being positioned as one of the country’s most distinctive wellness retreats, blending luxury with spiritual immersion.
Set across 60 acres of unspoiled Himalayan landscape, the property features 21 tented villas designed to harmonise with the surrounding environment. Conceived by renowned American designer Bill Bensley, the retreat combines imaginative design with cultural authenticity, offering an experience that feels both otherworldly and deeply rooted in Bhutanese tradition.
Guests arrive by crossing a suspension bridge lined with prayer flags before being welcomed with a traditional ritual for well-being, a nod to Bhutan’s spiritual ethos. The villas, which range from family-sized accommodations to a lavish presidential suite, are tucked along the banks of the Mo Chhu River. Each offers expansive outdoor decking, sweeping views, and private temperature-controlled pools, a first for Bhutan.
Interiors reflect Bhutanese heritage through bold palettes drawn from the national flag and architectural motifs inspired by dzongs, the fortress-monasteries unique to the region. The black accents used throughout pay subtle tribute to the nomadic highland tents of eastern Bhutan.

The name Pemako itself means “hidden lotus-shaped land”, a reference to the legendary beyul, sacred, hidden valleys believed in local lore to be places of refuge and enlightenment.
