Viking is broadening its European river cruise portfolio with a series of new experiences designed to deepen guests’ connection to the destinations they visit. From soaring above the Rhine Valley in a historic-style Zeppelin airship to enjoying intimate winery dinners in Austria and exploring Europe’s festive Christmas markets through local flavours, the cruise line is introducing a range of new shore excursions, small-group experiences and extended land journeys across the continent.

The enhancements, available from the 2026 season onward, reflect growing demand for immersive travel experiences that go beyond traditional sightseeing. Europe continues to be one of Viking’s most popular regions, particularly among first-time river cruisers, and the new offerings place a strong emphasis on local culture, gastronomy, history and authentic regional experiences.

Among the standout additions are Zeppelin airship flights over Cologne and Germany’s Ruhr Valley, giving guests a rare opportunity to view UNESCO-listed landmarks and sweeping river landscapes from the air. Elsewhere, food and wine take centre stage with experiences such as a biodynamic winery dinner in Austria’s Wachau Valley, a market visit and cooking class in Belgrade, and seasonal culinary tours in Rouen and Berlin.

Viking is also expanding its Small Group Experiences programme, offering more intimate access to iconic sites including the Palace of Versailles, Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace and the medieval streets of Český Krumlov and Colmar.

Beyond the river, a collection of new pre- and post-cruise land extensions will allow travellers to explore destinations in greater depth. Highlights include rail journeys aboard the Bernina Express through the Alps, cultural itineraries across Croatia and Slovenia, and new explorations of Belgium, the Netherlands, Piedmont and Andalusia.

Looking further ahead, Viking has also opened expressions of interest for its 2030 Oberammergau Passion Play itineraries, one of Europe’s most celebrated cultural events and a programme the company has offered regularly since 2010.
